Inside Milk

May 2, 2012

When I first came in USA I was surprised to see the shelf life of milk. It last months. So I did my little investigation on milk available here. Below is short summary of my findings, starting with few terminology..

Pasteurization:-

In modern world milk is supplied after High-temperature, short-time (HTST) pasteurized milk typically has a refrigerated shelf life of two to three weeks, whereas ultra-pasteurized milk can last much longer, sometimes two to three months. When ultra-heat treatment (UHT) is combined with sterile handling and container technology (such as aseptic packaging), it can even be stored unrefrigerated for 6 to 9 months.

Advantage:-

–          Longer shelf life

–          It kills harmful bacteria.

Disadvantage:-

–          Kills all good enzymes which helps in digesting  milk which otherwise very hard to digest. In fact half of value is lost due to pasteurization.

rBGH:- recombinant bovine growth hormone (rBGH), or artificial growth hormone

When injected in milk cows, they produce more milk. But it have been established that Genetically-engineered bovine growth hormone (rBGH) in milk increases cancer risks. It have bad impact on cows heath. Where cow start developing various allergies which in turn are given more antibiotic treatments. All these elements are passed to milk consumer.

Cow Feed:-

Most of cows in USA are feed with corn. Nearly 80% of USA seeds are Genetically modified. Genetically modified seeds are weak and have bad impact on health and environment. So most of milk produced by these cows are not good for health.

Kinds of option available in milk and best option.

Normal 90% milk :- Normal category milk available in USA is rBGH  and Utra heat treated milk which is not suitable for heath.

Special Low heat pasteurized milk :- This is rBGH free low pasteurized milk having low self life.

OPTION :-  oberweis (http://www.oberweis.com/web/default.asp)

Organic Milk :- This category is organic milk which is free from rBGH but it is UHT – but much better than normal category milk. These cows are feed with grass instead of corn.

OPTION :- Trader Joe (http://www.traderjoes.com/)

Hope this will give you good insight to decide what you want to choose.
